Protesters block Shahbagh demanding AL ban

Dhaka, 09 May 2025 : Protesters, led by the National Citizen Party (NCP), have blocked the Shahbagh intersection demanding a ban on the Awami League (AL).

A huge number of protesters came to Shahbagh at 4:45 pm today after the rally in front of the Jamuna.

Apart from NCP, supporters of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh, Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir, Jatiya Ganotantrik Party, UP Bangladesh, July Oikya, Students Against Discrimination (SAD), July Mancha, Inqilab Mancha and other political organizations have joined the protest.

Earlier in the day, a mass rally began at around 2:30 pm near the chief adviser’s residence Jamuna, demanding a ban on the Awami League.

At the rally, Hasnat Abdullah, chief organizer (South) of NCP, announced that they would block the Shahbagh intersection to press home their demand.

Hasnat Abdullah said, “Our words do not reach the interim government. The voices of the martyrs do not reach them, the cries of the injured do not reach them.”

“We will block Shahbagh after going out of here. We will continue the blockade until a notification is issued banning the Awami League,” he said.
